SERIAN: Several mini-hidro dams will be built in Balai Ringin to provide electricity to far-flung villages in the state constituency. Balai Ringin assemblyman Snowdan Lawan said 40 per cent of villages in his constituency have yet to enjoy electricity because many of the settlements are located far away from the Serian-Sri Aman road.
As such, Snowdan said he has proposed to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, through funds from the federal government, build mini-hidro dams at selected locations. He said a pioneer micro-hydro dam project is now being built at Keranggas, located three hours away from the main road.
Currently almost 80 per cent completed, the RM300,000 micro-hyro dam project will have a maximum power output of 50MW to supply electricity to three villages, with a school and population of over 300, said Snowdan. He added the project is also modelled after the community-based mini hydro dam in Kampung Abok Mawang, which was built two years ago with the assistance of University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).
He was confident that if the current project succeds, more mini-hydro dams would be approved for construction in his constituency. ” I gave the proposal to Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal when he came to Sarawak recently. Based on the proposal, the cost of building mini-hydro dams in selected locations will be RM10 million.
“If the dam in Keranggas succeds in reaching it objectives, then hopefully this will lead to more micro-hydro dams being built not only in my constituency but other areas as well,” he told reporter after officiating at a breaking of the fast gathering at Kampung Melayu Balai Ringin on Wednesday evening.
Snowdan, who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) vice-president, said he would request for more funds to implement the rural electrification scheme (RES) in his constituency under the upcoming 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP). Stressing that the focus of the RES would be to extend electricity to settlements near the main road ( Serian-Sri Aman road), he said his constituency needed a total allocation of RM55 million for the RES.
” The government has allocated RM15 million for first phase of RES here. Hopefully, we can get more funds for the second phase soon,” he said.
